Santa Maria del Buon Aiuto nell’ Anfiteatro Castrense is a mediaeval chapel located on the site of the ancient amphitheatre by the Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
It was built in 1476 by Pope Sixtus IV for those wishing to pray liturgically for the souls in Purgatory. It has also been known as del Soccorso or de Spazolaria. The story is that it was in gratitude to Our Lady answering his prayer when he was in danger during a storm. There is a venerated icon of “Our Lady of Good Help” inside.
At present it belongs to the “Confraternity of Holy Mary of Good Help and of SS Benedict and Bernard”.
The gabled façade is extremely plain, with only an unadorned window above the entrance. There is a dedicatory inscription above the door, merely mentioning Pope Sixtus and the year.
