San Tommaso ai Cenci is a church dedicated to St Thomas the Apostle.

History

The church was built in the 12th century for the workers on the wheat mills on the Tiber.

In 1575, it was restored by Francesco Cenci, whose family owned the nearby Palazzo Cenci Bolognetti, and became the Cenci family's chapel.

Francesco Cenci was banished from Rome by the Pope in 1590. He was cruel to his family, and in 1598 his son Giacomo killed him and tried to make it look like an accident. His plan failed, and in 1599 Giacomo, his sister Beatrice (Bernice) and their mother were executed for murder. The youngest of the children, Bernardo, was imprisoned for life. After the fall of that family, the Confraterntiy of Coachmen used it, and said Mass here on the anniversary of the Cenci executions. Beatrice is buried in San Pietro in Montorio.

The church has now been deconsecrated. A social welfare agency is now housed here, but it is usually be possible to visit the chapel that remains.
