Major basilica is an honorific term referring only to the four great churches of Rome. The order of precedence is:

San Giovanni in Laterano

San Pietro in Vaticano

San Paolo fuori le Mura

Santa Maria Maggiore

The term is in distinction from minor basilica.

The title Patriarchal basilica used to be applied to these churches, but has been suppressed.
