A cathedral is the main church of a diocese. The name comes from Latin cathedra, meaning "chair" or "seat", and refers to the cathedral being the bishop's seat. The term is also used more loosely about any large church.
In Rome, the only cathedral in the strict sense of the word is San Giovanni in Laterano; San Pietro in Vaticano is strictly speaking a papal chapel.
